First off, Happy belated to Sarah Secker and Ronnie who had the last 9 days and thank you to Becki for the cake from Ronnie. It was fantasic.

Also congratulations to Chris Prescot and Matt in the competition. And heres a review on the competition by Mr. T himseld:

On Wednesday the 12th of November, the University of Derby Mountaineering Club held an open competition at Alter Rock climbing centre. Me and Chris Prescott went along to compete in the competition, so this is my review.

Firstly, finding the Alter Rock climbing centre from Derby train centre was very easy with directions from google maps. The wall consists of a bouldering section, along with lead and top-rope walls. The wall felt very welcoming as the staff were nice and friendly and the wall is clean with good routes and problems set for all levels.

The competition format was that you could either enter top-rope and bouldering, lead and bouldering, or just bouldering. I entered the lead and bouldering, whilst Chris entered the top-rope and bouldering. I flashed the first two lead routes from the six competition lead routes. However, on attempting the third competition lead route, I took a fall trying to clip the second clip. All it was, was a slip of my left foot, which left me landing with the rope inbetween my legs as it went tight. Nasty.

After rolling around on the floor a little, some bouldering was in order to get some confidence back. Some of the boulder problems were nice and simple to do, although another slip of a foot left me head-butting the wall (Why is it that I always do stupid things in competitions? Just ask about the redpoint competition for more about that). Some of the harder problems were tricky for me, and there always seems to be problems that feel impossible. However, falling is fun so might as well try them.

After abit of bouldering, I went and tried lead competition route four. It felt good but I chickened out about a quarter of the way up, rememberng how sore I felt after falling off route three. So the competition ended with more bouldering, and abit of slack-lining (which is aparantly set up at alter rock most of the time so worth a play on).

Neither me nor Chris won the competitions we had entered, however, I got a prize (T-shirt) for best lob (fall) in the lead competition, and both me and Chris got prizes ( a torch and a water bottle) for representing the SUMC.

All in all, I highly recommend alter rock, and I also recommend anyone who hasn’t done a competition before to do one as they are awesome fun with like-minded people, and help to improve your climbing as it makes you try things you maybe wouldn’t normally. Also, if another team event comes up we need female competitors as the team scores usually consist of best two male and one female score to count. If nothing else its a nice day out.

Sure Chris will be along with his review shortly. There is possibly another one at Nottingham in the near future so keep listening for news on that.

Thanks

Matt

Once again congratulations to Matt and Chris and hope ye repersent the club more. And also OWNAGE!! to Matt for the lob.

As everyone knows, there was a club meeting about various issues revolving about Christmas plans, future trips, and plannings for the wall. If you missed it you can ask people who where there you will know what you missed.

Killian is also planning a Trip to Roaches on friday for people if you intrested and also Ollie and Chris is planing for the Kendal Film Festival so you should ask them about it soon.

Matt wants to know what people think of the routes and if they want easier or harder routes put up give him a shout. Or if there is a specific move you want eg a route with dyno, a route with easier crimps, etc please contact him.

Finally, there is a possibility of some of us going to Roaches if its sunny and Red point in Birmingham via train if it rains. If anyone is intrested ask me (Ronnie for those who don’t know who writes the website) or Matt for details on it at the wall for feel free to call me anytime.

The University of Derby Mountaineering Club are having an open competition that anyone who is interested can attend. Some further details are here:  http://www.alter-rock.co.uk/documents/UDMC%20BUCS%20Warmup.pdf
Events are bouldering, leading and top-roping depending on your abilities and what takes your fancy on the day. There are individual and team prizes with the top 2 male and 1 female scores going towards the team score. There will be someone wearing a red UDMC t-shirt waiting at Derby station at 12:30 to walk people over to alter-rock climbing centre. However, may be worth having directions incase you can’t find them, or arrive just after they have left. Any further questions should be asked to: udmc@hotmail.co.uk

If I am well enough I will try to make it over and compete.

Thanks

Matt

Hope everyone had a good Halloween. We, at the Sumc did with a party at Dan’s house to kick things off then to Tim’s. All in all, it was a good night indeed. Man points to all those that bothered to actually dress up for the occasion. Although we don’t have many pictures of the night unfortunatly, we do have some which I’ll upload eventually and we do have a video but it won’t be uploaded. If you want to see it you gotta get permission off Micheal first then ask me.

On the Mentioning of photos, I finally got the gallery layout how I want it, (organised and not looking sloppy) so all other photos from club trip and Halloween will be uploaded shortly. Til then, why not sit back and enjoy the images from the climbing wall that I’ve finally managed to upload here.

Also just for a few reminders for this week, today (sunday) is the last day for ordering Club Kit, with money must be delivered to Ceara, James or Alex. If you forgot, you better get in touch with them and hope they will let you off otherwise you may have to wait until next year in 2009.

Thursday, the 6th of Novemeber is ABC night in the LRV so there won’t be climbing this Thursday. 2years ago, the SUMC were the ABC night winners for 2years running so this year, we need to return the crown back to our name. So on Monday, which is tomorrow, everyone bring in something white to make a Toga out of as we have the letter ‘R’ and we are doing Romans. Also on Monday, everyone will be giving names to go by for the night so make sure you are there! If you need details on this, get in touch with Dan the Social Sec.

Finally before I head over to climbing, which I am late for again, I would like on behalf of the SUMC, wish Jane (Tim’s girlfriend and close friend to the ML group) a Happy Birthday on the 6th of November.

Club Trip to Yorkshire 24th-26th October

Hope everyone is comfortable at home again after what can only be described as an amazing club trip to the Yorkshire Dales organised by Andy, our Trip Sec and Dan the Social Sec, who provided all the entertainment for the weekend (in more ways than one). Although many arrived late, trying to find the cottage in Settle in the pitch dark, the first night, was still quite a nice relaxing night with quite a few games of table tennis, provided by the house and the table challenge.   The second day, everyone woke up to a nice refreshing breakfast cooked by Tim and Dan, after which everyone either went out to go for climbs in the different areas of the Dales or for a 15km walk. Unfortunately for many of us that went climbing, the rain prevented our conquest of some of the routes we planned to do, while some of the extremist remained to climb in the blistering winds, the others went into the little village of Skipton to check out Yorkshire herself or the Theakston’s Brewery for another lazier group.    Even though the morning was held back by the bad weather, the night resulted in being one of the best socials in the club history. Dinner being cooked as a fancy 2-course meal with a home-made vegetable soup cooked by Tramp Alex and chicken stew for the main course by our chair-woman Ceara herself. No complaints can be made to our chefs for what can only be described as a gorgeous meal. After dinner activities which included the climbing club tradition, the box game, alot of beer, wine and spirits resulted in an amazing night for all. I don’t think anyone can complain about that night at all with the value for money entertainment with lots to do and see for all. (All who were at the trip will know what I mean unless the drink clogged their memories)  Early morning Sunday turned out to be quite a shock. The weather was amazing and we were all excited to get some climbing done for the day. With a nice pan banging for alarm clock everyone was up and awake really soon and the house was cleaned up after breakfast in no-time. For the trip, we the club was divided in 2 groups. 1 Consisting of Ollie, Matt, Spider-Nick and Tom, who went to Malham Cove to do some hardcore 7a+ climbing on limestone, and the rest of us to Crookrise. The drive to Crookrise was quite scenic with an amazing view of the valleys and rivers. When we finally got there, we all had an amazing climb. Especially Alex’s solo and our fresher, Micheal’s HVS climb which was truly impressive.  Although we were sad to conclude the trip, some of us went to bar for two 50p games of pool and a quite a good chat before finally leaving.  Before I sign off this update though, there are a few people I think we all, on the club would like to thank. These people are Leanne Hughes, Nick Cox and Darren Samson who came and helped out with lifts and for providing more laughs with the club. It’s good to see that we still have support from our old members who are more than welcome to come join us either at the wall or socials or any club trip in the future at anytime.
